For a successful colonoscopy, your colon must be clear of any stool. This allows your doctor to see your entire colon. It is extremely important to follow these preparation instructions to clear your colon of any stool, otherwise the procedure may need to be repeated.

Avoid high residue foods, generally any foods that ‘crunches’ in your mouth.
AVOID High Residue Foods
ALLOWED Low Residue Foods
Drink as much clear fluids as you can before, during and after having the preparation solution to prevent dehydration.
ALLOWED Clear Fluids
Clear fluids is any fluid you can see through. Avoid red or purple liquids as the remaining liquid in your colon can be tinted red or purple and be confused for bleeding.

It is important to arrange to have a 'carer' to care for you when you leave the hospital. Every patient who has a procedure performed under sedation and is leaving hospital within the same day as their procedure needs to be handed over to a carer (over 18 years of age). This person will be responsible for your wellbeing and recovery for up to 24hrs.
It is important that you re-arrange your normal activities and take time off for :
A medical certificate will be provided by Dr Chen on the day of the procedure if required (including the person responsible for picking you up from hospital & caring for you at home).

You will need to start the low residue diet 2 days prior to your colonoscopy.
This reduces the fibre in your bowel, which makes it easier when you start the bowel cleansing regime.

It is important to follow the diet & bowel preparation instructions that have been provided to you. For a successful colonoscopy, it is very important that the bowel is cleaned well. This will enable Dr Chen to clearly see the lining of the bowel.
Poor preparation may mean that the procedure will be stopped and that you will have to repeat the preparations and procedure on another day.
Failure to have a bowel motion
People vary in the time it takes to have a bowel motion after commencing bowel preparation. To help relieve any concerns about your progress, the following information may help guide you.
Helpful hints and tips


Dissolve each of the 4 sachets of GLYCOPREP ORANGE into 1L of water using a suitable container (total of 4 containers) in the morning.
Chill in a refrigerator prior to drinking

Dissolve the entire sachet of Magnesium citrate into 1 mug of hot water (~250ml). Mix and then allow to cool / chill in refrigerator




And you don't think you can tolerate drinking 4L of bowel prep, then try Picoprep instead
If despite following all instructions and your bowel motions are not clear, go to the hospital as planned, and at the admissions desk, ask to speak to a nurse as soon as possible regarding concerns about your bowel preparation
Before your go home, Dr Chen will discuss with you the findings of the procedure and relevant findings. You will be given a copy of your procedure report and discharge instructions. A copy of this report will also be sent to your GP. Your procedure and results are to be discussed at a follow-up appointment with your GP (allow 2-3 business days generally for the results to become available). Dr Chen will also email you a copy of your results.
A nurse will also speak with you and your carer about what to expect when you leave.
After you leave the hospital, if you have any non-urgent concerns, please speak with your GP or contact Dr Chen (via office phone or email) or the procedure department directly.
